The Argonne Accelerator Institute (AAI) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a multi-year appointment to contribute to the conceptual design of a compact, wakefield-driven X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) for attosecond science.
The selected candidate will play a leading technical role in the design of a next-generation compact XFEL capable of producing agile, tunable, and coherent X-ray pulses. The project explores accelerator and FEL concepts that support flexible control of X-ray pulse timing, duration, intensity, temporal structure, and coherence, including multi-pulse and mode-locked operation. This work aims to establish a blueprint for a future compact light source that could complement the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and enable the study of matter on attosecond timescales.
The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary Argonne team spanning accelerator physics, beam dynamics, wakefield acceleration, free-electron laser science, and FEL user communities. The postdoctoral researcher will lead technical activities in beam-dynamics and FEL modeling, with an emphasis on start-to-end simulations of compact XFEL performance.
