Lead the development of a novel laser-excitation scheme for droplet-based solution samples and demonstrate it with time-resolved X-ray measurements at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source.

The Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics Group in Argonne National Laboratory’s Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division invites applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee position. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and apply new measurement capabilities for investigating chemical reactivity in water droplets using time-resolved optical and X-ray spectroscopy. The successful candidate will join a collaborative project with the Time-Resolved Research Group in the X-ray Science Division at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The project aims to establish an innovative approach for studying solution-phase chemistry with high temporal resolution.

The Postdoctoral Appointee will lead the development of a novel laser-excitation scheme for solution samples delivered by a drop-on-demand droplet source.

Key responsibilities:

  • Designing, constructing, testing, and benchmarking experimental instrumentation for time-resolved studies of solution-phase chemical dynamics
  • Developing laser optical systems and excitation strategies compatible with droplet-based sample delivery
  • Demonstrating the technique at Sector 25 of the Advanced Photon Source by conducting time-resolved X-ray measurements
  • Incorporating optical transient-absorption measurements, as appropriate, to complement X-ray studies
  • Analyzing and interpreting experimental results in collaboration with interdisciplinary project team members
  • Communicating findings through peer-reviewed journal publications, presentations, and technical reports

This role is well suited for a creative and motivated experimental scientist who enjoys developing new instrumentation, working at the forefront of ultrafast science, and collaborating across disciplines.
