Fabs Are Closing. Design Isn't.

A monthly read on the U.S. semiconductor and aerospace job market, built from Career Engine's direct-employer job posting search — not job-board reposts. This month: two legacy fab closures, a defense-electronics hiring surge, and where the money actually is.

Two of the most-watched names in American chipmaking closed factory floors this quarter — Texas Instruments shut a legacy 150mm wafer line in Sherman, Texas; Infineon shuttered its Mesa, Arizona fab entirely. Read the headlines and the story writes itself: semiconductor manufacturing is contracting. Read the hiring data underneath those headlines, and a different story shows up — one where design, AI infrastructure, and defense-electronics engineering are hiring harder than at almost any point we've tracked.

Both stories are true at once. That's the actual shape of the market right now, and it's the reason a single "layoffs" or "hiring" number from either direction misleads. Here's what the pool actually shows.

01. The pool, in one glance

MetricValue
Open semiconductor & aerospace roles tracked live43,894
Distinct employers with open reqs this month172
Median posted salary band (where disclosed)$130.7K–$194K
Individual-contributor roles (not management)70%

02. The bifurcation, by the numbers

We cross-referenced this quarter's public WARN Act layoff filings against the same companies' currently open requisitions in our own pool. The pattern holds across all three names we checked:

EmployerCutOpen now
Texas Instruments~400400
Infineon Technologies9821
Intel Corporation103420
  • Texas Instruments — the cuts are a legacy 150mm wafer fab closure (Dallas/Sherman, TX — publicly confirmed WARN filing). The 400 open roles are currently open U.S. requisitions across TI's other sites and functions.
  • Infineon Technologies — the cuts are the full closure of the Mesa, AZ fab (production, quality, and facilities roles). The 21 open roles are still-open U.S. requisitions elsewhere in Infineon's org.
  • Intel Corporation — the cuts come from four separate WARN notices at Intel's Santa Clara headquarters buildings this quarter. The 420 open roles are open U.S. requisitions across Intel's pool — roughly 4x the headquarters headcount reduction.

We're not claiming these are the same jobs moving from one column to the other — a fab technician role and an ASIC design role aren't interchangeable, and we don't have the granularity to say a laid-off TI fab worker is a good fit for a TI design opening. What the numbers do show plainly: "Intel is cutting jobs" and "Intel is hiring" are both accurate this month, depending on which part of the org you're looking at. Manufacturing capacity is consolidating. Engineering headcount, largely, is not.

03. Who's actually hiring

New requisitions opened in the last 30 days, direct from each employer's own career site:

EmployerNew reqs (30d)
Parsons Corporation2,050
Blue Origin1,725
Anduril Industries748
Thales Group708
NVIDIA493
Boeing485
AMD292
Texas Instruments211
Intel207
Analog Devices116

Defense and aerospace primes (Parsons, Blue Origin, Anduril, Thales, Boeing) account for four of the top five spots — the clearest single signal in this month's data.

04. Where the jobs are

  • Santa Clara, CA — 1,470 open roles

  • Costa Mesa, CA — 1,319 open roles

  • San Jose, CA — 1,040 open roles

  • Seattle, WA — 876 open roles

  • Austin, TX — 726 open roles

  • Sunnyvale, CA — 622 open roles

Costa Mesa's #2 ranking is almost entirely Anduril — a single defense-tech employer reshaping a metro's demand profile.

05. What employers are asking for

Most-requested skills across new postings this month:

  • Python — 855 mentions

  • Project Management — 510 mentions

  • C++ — 395 mentions

  • Team Leadership — 380 mentions

  • CAD — 321 mentions

  • Systems Engineering — 258 mentions

  • Civil Engineering — 225 mentions

  • GD&T — 220 mentions

  • Manufacturing Engineering — 189 mentions

A note on clearance and remote work

2,068 of this month's open roles carry an explicit security-clearance requirement — about 5% of the pool, concentrated almost entirely in the defense/aerospace names above. Remote-eligible roles remain rare in this vertical: just 376 of 43,894, under 1%. Hardware doesn't work from home.

06. What we're still figuring out how to say precisely

Two honest caveats. First, "15,519 new postings in 30 days" — a real number in our system — is noisier than it looks: it mixes genuinely new reqs with older postings our system saw for the first time this month, and we don't yet have a clean historical baseline to separate the two. We're building that (see below) rather than publish a month-over-month growth number we can't fully stand behind. Second, only 26% of postings disclose salary — enough for a directional read, not enough to call it representative.

Methodology

Every number above comes from Career Engine's own direct-employer job posting search — no job-board scrapes, no resold data. Pool snapshot taken September 14, 2026, scoped to semiconductor and aerospace industry postings, U.S.-located roles. Layoff figures are sourced from public WARN Act filings with the relevant state labor agencies. We're building a running weekly snapshot so next month's edition can show real deltas instead of a fresh point-in-time count — this edition is the baseline.
